Moving to the Netherlands with a dog or cat: an official-source checklist

Use the Netherlands government guidance to identify whether EU or non-EU import conditions apply. Some routes require more preparation time than others.

Do not rely on a checklist written for another country. Transit countries can also matter, particularly when the animal leaves the EU during the journey.

Official EU guidance commonly centres on an identifiable microchip, valid rabies vaccination and the appropriate passport or animal health certificate. The sequence and timing can be important.

Ask an authorised veterinarian to review the record well before travel. A name on a document is not enough if identification numbers, dates or ownership details do not match.

Confirm carrier dimensions, check-in procedure, temperature restrictions and animal limits directly with the operator. Prepare water, familiar bedding and any veterinarian-approved care plan.

Keep original documents accessible during the journey and store secure copies. Never place essential paperwork in luggage you cannot reach at inspection.

Register with a local veterinarian, check municipal dog rules and introduce the new environment gradually. Keep routines predictable while the animal adapts to sounds, stairs, bicycles and public spaces.

Arrange care before your first work trip or long day away. Share the pet's travel history and settling-in behaviour with a sitter or walker.
